Detectives/FBI is a member
of the police force that would potentially be involved within an investigation.
The detective will attend the crime scene after the first attending officer has
analysed the scene and called for the appropriate authority sectors that need
to be involved. The detective will have a superior responsibility than police
officers within the region. A detective will be held responsible for ensuring
that the crime scene is securely cornered off by the public, and that the area
cornered off is large enough ensuring no evidence is outside of the scene. They also supervise/run the preliminary
investigation and analyse any significant information brought to their
attention by police officers. They will then lead the follow up investigation
and delegate roles to other police officers, ensuring that they are carrying
out their roles and responsibilities correctly. The detective will be follow
the investigation closely, ensuring that all lines of enquiry are thoroughly
investigated and analysing any intelligence.
Detectives will be
involved in a variety of different investigations that are of a high profile,
such as serial murder or rape. The police officers will initially analyse the
crime scene and depending upon the information they obtain determines whether
they believe the detectives are needed to assist the investigation. Detectives
are involved in minor investigations, such as theft or vandalism.
Referring to the Paul
Morin case there were two different detectives involved, this was because the
investigation first begun in York, therefore a detective from the York Regional
Police conducted and organised the investigation. However once the body was
found with Durham, Detective Shephard took over. The role of the detective then
changed as it had now become a murder investigation rather than a missing
persons investigation. Therefore Detective Shephard objectives changed as their
fundamental aim was to identify and then locate the killer of Christine Jessop,
whereas the objective declared by Detective Fitzpatrick was to locate Christine
Jessop as it was simply considered a missing persons case.
FBI profiler John
Douglas was involved within the investigation when the body of Christine Jessop
was found and they had found enough evidence to suggest particular characteristics
of the killer. Douglas created a profile stating different characteristics of
what the police and public should be looking out for. However unknown to the
public the police manipulated the profile to fit the characteristics of Paul
Morin.
The roles and responsibilities of a detective typically don't change within an investigation, as th
serious crimes
